I ended up using AMI ami-ccf615a5, an instance of Ubuntu 9. 04, which was the latest version available at the time of this writing.

A popular UK computer magazine had an issue dedicated to Ubuntu , andalso included Ubuntu 9. 04 as the cover disk.

I am now running Ubuntu 9. 04 and will be downloading Karmic as soon as I get around to it.
